The North Carolina State football head coach opening might not be Philip Rivers’ to lose after all.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Tuesday that 10-time NFL Pro Bowler Russell Wilson interviewed for the Wolfpack job, adding another big name to their coaching search.
Over the weekend, On3 reported that Rivers had emerged as the focus of their coaching search following the firing of Dave Doeren after a 31-28 loss to Stanford that dropped the team to 3-4 overall and 1-3 in ACC play before their win over California under interim coach Todd Goebbel on Saturday.
At the time, On3 added that there was no timetable for Rivers’ potential hiring, as he intended to finish the high school football season as head coach of St. Michael Catholic in Fairhope, Ala.
Rivers played four years at the school, and his son, Gunner, a four-star quarterback, committed to join the Wolfpack in 2027.
“Ton of respect and appreciation for coach Doeren and all he did for the University,” Rivers told AL.com. “I understand the chatter that’s out there, but we are getting ready for Foley and the playoffs.”
The Wolfpack went 98-74 over 14 seasons under Doeren.
Like Rivers, Wilson spent time in college at NC State, playing three seasons in Raleigh before heading to Wisconsin for his senior year.
Earlier this year, Wilson joined CBS’ “NFL Today” pregame show alongside James Brown, Nate Burleson, and Bill Cowher.
Wilson started three games for the Giants at the start of last season before losing the job to Jaxson Dart.
He flirted with the Jets over the offseason and told The Post he had an offer from another team, but decided to get behind the mic instead for the 2026 season.
Wilson has no previous coaching experience, but his 13 NFL seasons, which included a Super Bowl championship with the Seahawks, could make him an intriguing candidate for a program looking to turn things around.
