Savannah Guthrie made her highly anticipated return to NBC’s “Today” show Monday for the first time since her 84-year-old mom, Nancy Guthrie, went missing more than two months ago, bravely saying “it is good to be home.”
The NBC star made zero mention of her mother’s disappearance as she jumped straight into reading off the day’s headlines.
“Good morning and welcome to ‘Today’ on this Monday morning. We are so glad you started your week with us and it is good to be home,” she said.
Guthrie donned a yellow dress while her co-host, Craig Melvin, wore a matching tie and pin — the color often used to show support amid hostage situations.
It comes after Guthrie abruptly went off the air and rushed to Tucson to be with family as news broke that her elderly mom had gone missing back on Feb. 1.
Guthrie, one of morning television’s most recognizable faces, had earlier revealed she would be making a comeback — despite not knowing how she’ll manage with the uncertainty hanging over her.
“It’s hard to imagine doing it because it’s such a place of joy and lightness,” she said just over a week ago when she gave her first interview since the disappearance.
“I can’t come back and try to be something that I’m not. But I can’t not come back because it’s my family.”
“I want to smile, and when I do it will be real,” she told Hoda Kotb, who came back to “Today” to fill in while Guthrie focused on the search.
“Being there is joyful, and when it’s not I’ll say so,” she added.
Guthrie’s return comes a day after she shared a painful Easter message acknowledging she was currently having a hard time.
“These moments of deep disappointment with God, the feeling of utter abandonment,” she continued. “For most of us, there will come a time in our life when these feelings hold sway.”
Nancy is believed to have been snatched from her home in Tucson, Arizona, during the early hours of Feb. 1 after chilling security footage from her doorbell camera captured a masked man loitering on her doorstep.
