The Seahawks aren’t sure about visiting the White House just yet.
Super Bowl-winning head coach Mike Macdonald said Wednesday at the NFL combine that he and the Seahawks will make a decision on whether they’ll go to the nation’s capital after they hear from President Donald Trump.
“We haven’t got an invite yet,” Macdonald said. “And then we’ll address it after that, after we get the invite.”
The Seattle Times reported that the “initial inclination of the organization would be to accept the invite.”
Macdonald added that the decision on whether to go or not would be made collectively.
“I think it’s just everybody involved, just like we do everything else,” he said when asked about how a decision would be made.
White House visits have become a lightning rod for controversy in recent years.
Last year, the Eagles accepted Trump’s invitation to the White House, although stars like Jalen Hurts, A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith declined to attend.
After winning the 2018 Super Bowl, the Eagles did not go to Washington, D.C., after Trump rescinded his invitation over a disagreement surrounding the national anthem kneeling debate at the time. Many Eagles were not expected to attend if the invite remained valid.
Seattle visited the White House in 2014 after winning the Super Bowl when President Barack Obama was in office.
More recently, members of the U.S. men’s Olympic hockey team attended the State of the Union address on Tuesday night after taking home gold in Italy.
Five players returned home rather than making the stop in D.C. to prepare for the resumption of the NHL season.
Trump said the women’s hockey team, which also won the gold medal this month, will “soon” visit the Oval Office despite declining his State of the Union invitation.
The Trump administration confirmed earlier in February that the World Series champion Dodgers would attend a ceremony at the White House this year. A date hasn’t been set yet.
