The parade and its related celebration, J’Ouvert, have a history of violence.

In 2015, Gov. Andrew Cuomo aide Carey Gabay was fatally shot in the head in gang crossfire.

The following year, two victims — St. John’s University student Tiarah Poyau, 22, and Tyreke Borel, 17 — were shot dead at the celebration.

In 2023, at least two people were shot and a third person was slashed along the parade route.
