The sixth suspect in the suspected terror plot at RAF Fairford base in England has been bailed, British counterterrorism police said Saturday.
The unidentified 25-year-old man, a dual UK-Iranian national, was arrested Thursday in London on suspicion of preparing terrorist acts under the Terrorism Act in connection to an alleged terror plot last month.
He was released Saturday following searches at two properties in London, according to police.
“The investigation into the circumstances surrounding events in Gloucestershire is continuing,” police said in a statement.
Five other British nationals between 23 and 25 years old were arrested on Sept. 27 and released one day later despite being arrested on explosive and terror charges.
Police said the men were found with three vans full of “not viable” explosives. RAF Fairford is used by the US military.
Sources told The Telegraph that Iran is considered the most likely source of the plot. Iran previously threatened action against the base, which has served as a launch point for some US operations during the war.
“I’m surprised that they released them. I wouldn’t have done that. Look, they’ve been very good. They’re working with us very closely. We know everything about them. We would not have released them,” President Donald Trump told the press on Monday.
Newly minted British Prime Minister Andy Burnham said on Wednesday that there are “strong indications” of Iranian involvement.
Iran has denied involvement in the incident.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio further called the attempted terror plot “a very serious situation.”
“It’s one that clearly involves the hand of a foreign actor,” Rubio added in a Fox News interview on Sept. 28.
