Speedskater Kamila Sellier leaves race on stretcher in bloody Olympic scene

It was a scary moment on the speedskating track.

In the sixth quarterfinal head of the women’s 1500 meters, Polish skater Kamila Sellier did not finish after taking a blade to the face in a bloody scene.

Sellier was cut under he left eye as she fell when American skater Kristen Santos-Griswold’s skate caught her up high as they tangled up with Italy’s Arian Fontana.

The 25-year-old laid in the corner cradling her head above a pool of blood.

The race was delayed for several minutes with 13 laps to go as medics attended to Sellier and attendants cleaned the ice.

Sellier gave the crowd a thumbs-up as she left the ice on a stretcher.


2026 WINTER OLYMPICS


Polish officials said she received stiches before heading to the hospital, than that her eye was OK.

Fontana, a 15-time Olympic medalist from Italy, received treatment on her left hip from her physiotherapist during the stoppage and finished second in the heat to Belgium’s Hanne Desmet.

Neither Sellier nor Santos-Grisworld returned to finish the race, with the American receiving a penalty for an illegal lane pass that contributed to the accident.
