PORT ST. LUCIE — The pipeline Steve Cohen seeks can’t be bought.

If it were the Alaska pipeline, maybe the Mets owner and several like-minded investors could just write a check. But a pitching pipeline that periodically will replenish the major league roster with young, relatively inexpensive talent is trickier.

The Mets continue to take baby steps. Last season, it was homegrown Christian Scott who arrived during the season to provide a boost for the rotation. Scott succeeded for a stretch, but a torn elbow ligament led to Tommy John surgery and waiting until 2026 before he resurfaces.

If there was a little extra buzz at Clover Park on Friday, it was because the organization’s top prospect, Brandon Sproat, appeared in the Grapefruit League for the first time in his young career.
