A suspected Israeli airstrike reportedly hit near a Russian airbase in Syria accused of housing weapons for Iran and its terror proxies.
Up to 30 missiles were fired at a target near the Khmeimim air base in Latakia, with footage spreading online of massive explosions near the Russian facility overnight, the Telegraph reported.
The appearance of secondary explosions suggest the strikes hit a weapons or munitions depot, according to the UK outlet.
The attack occurred an hour after an Iranian Qassem Fars Airlines cargo plane, which may have been delivering weapons, landed at the base, the Telegraph said, citing reports in Syrian media.
The airline has previously been accused of transporting weapons for Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
There have been no official confirmations about the attack, which was cited by Russian wartime bloggers and Lebanon media groups, who suggested drones were used in the strike.
Footage of the alleged attack has also been picked up by Ukrainian officials and media outlets, celebrating the attack bordering their Moscow nemesis.
Ukraine’s Centre for Strategic Communications claimed – without evidence – that the strike “decimated” the Russian air base, lauding that “Russia’s red lines exist only in fairy tales.”
Prior to reports of that attack, Syria’s state-run SANA news agency said an Israeli airstrike hit a residential building in Damascus, killing at least three people and leaving three others wounded.
An Associated Press reporter at the scene confirmed that a missile struck the four-story apartment building.
Like with attacks that hit Iran, Israel typically remains silent regarding suspected strikes in Syria.
