This latest gritty win was quintessential St. John’s

There was a moment early Tuesday night when St. John’s missed another shot — it’s hard to remember if it was a 3-pointer or a midrange jumper or a layup; at that part of the game, they were equal opportunity bricklayers — when the overhead scoreboard recalculated the Johnnies’ shooting percentage.

And if you listened closely enough — as the red number clicked to “7.7” — it almost seemed like the scoreboard was weeping.

“This is the worst around-the-world team I’ve ever seen!” came the thundering commentary from one playground philosopher sitting upstairs in Section 214.

Yep. This was an ugly one. St. John’s couldn’t shoot the ball. Georgetown couldn’t shoot the ball. This is a game to remember when you complain that nobody plays defense anymore. This is what happens when you have extra helpings of defense. You have a rock fight, only it felt like the Johnnies and Hoyas weren’t just fighting with rocks but billy clubs and nightsticks, too.
