The Trae Young era in Atlanta appears to be coming to an end. But when one door closes in the NBA, another one opens.
Multiple reports surfaced Monday that Young and the Hawks were exploring trade possibilities for the star point guard. Young has been in and out of the Hawks’ lineup with injuries, and the team has a better record with him out (15-13) than with him playing (2-8).
Speculation reached its peak when Marc Stein reported that the Wizards emerged as one of the suitors for Young and were seeking to structure a package around CJ McCollum’s $30 million expiring contract.
The Wizards are high up the list of teams oddsmakers expect Young to be on after this whole fiasco ends, but the Mavericks are the favorites to land Young.
Based on bet365‘s odds, Dallas is +300 to land Young in a trade.

The Mavericks have been the subject of trade rumors all season, with Anthony Davis’ name popping up frequently in reports.
ESPN’s Tim MacMahon mentioned on the Hoop Collective Podcast that the Mavericks wanted to trade Davis to Atlanta, but not for Young, because they have Kyrie Irving at point guard. Given Young’s $45 million salary, it would be very difficult to make a deal that would satisfy the new CBA rules without those two high-paid players involved.

Young’s desire to reach an extension with his next team will be a factor in his situation as well. He has a $48.9 million player option for the 2026-27 season and a 15 percent trade kicker. Few NBA teams at the top of the odds board have the ability to make a trade for his salary without giving up a significant player.
The fact that the Hawks are second on this list can’t be overlooked. Both sides may want a trade, but if nothing makes sense for the team or player, Young could wind up staying in Atlanta until they figure things out in the offseason.
