At least two passengers were seriously injured.

UK police and emergency services have converged on the scene of a passenger train derailment in Essex, southern England.

A major incident has been declared.

A passenger train derailed and overturned in the UK — 11 people were injured

CNN reported:

“The incident happened around 3:54 p.m. (10:54 a.m. ET) near Lewes railway station in East Sussex, around 45 miles south of London, according to British Transport Police.

Images posted to social media appear to show several train carriages on their sides, with people standing on top of them.

[…] ‘At this stage, we can confirm that two patients have sustained serious injuries and a further nine patients have sustained less serious injuries’, the [South East Coast] ambulance service said in an update. ‘Patients have been assessed and treated at the scene, with some transported to local hospitals for further treatment and care’.”

British Transport Police has confirmed that a major incident has been declared after a train derailed near Lewes in East Sussex, on Thursday afternoon 13th August 2026.

BBC reported:

“Photos from the site show emergency workers around the train on its side in a field next to the tracks, with one passenger saying the incident ‘felt like a car crash’ and another saying the train derailed from carriage five.

[…] Operator Southern Railway has told passengers ‘do not travel’ in the affected area for the rest of the day, with the Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) saying it has deployed a team of inspectors to the site to begin gathering evidence.”

Rob Bradley, who was travelling with his young daughter on the train that derailed near Lewes this afternoon, said he could see “the whole back of the train open up”.
