Waymo calls cops on teen riders after detecting loaded AR-style ‘ghost gun’

Two minors riding in a self-driving Waymo were arrested in San Francisco after the company became aware of a firearm inside the robotaxi, pulled it over and alerted police — who later recovered a loaded, AR-style “ghost gun.”

Waymo said it pulled the vehicle over after becoming aware of a “violation of our terms of service involving a firearm,” then alerted emergency services and cooperated with San Francisco police, according to SFGATE and the Los Angeles Times.

San Francisco police officers from Richmond Station were called to 40th Avenue and Cabrillo Street before 4 a.m. on Sept. 3, following a report that two passengers inside the autonomous vehicle had a firearm.

When officers arrived, they detained the two passengers, a boy and a girl whose names and ages have not been released because they are minors.

Police said they searched the vehicle and recovered a loaded AR-style rifle described as a ghost gun.

Ghost guns don’t have serial numbers, making them difficult for law enforcement to trace.

Officers also searched the two juveniles and recovered suspected marijuana and mace spray, according to police.

Both juveniles were arrested on charges related to illegal firearm possession. They were taken into custody and booked into San Francisco’s Juvenile Justice Center.

This isn’t the first time Waymo has contacted police over the behavior of underage passengers.

A similar incident happened in July, when San Mateo police responded to a Waymo after the company alerted authorities that two 15-year-olds inside the self-driving vehicle appeared to be drinking and firing an object from the car.

Police ultimately determined the teenagers had been firing Orbeez water beads from the vehicle while drinking.

“Parents do you know where your teens are? @waymo does!” the San Mateo Police Department wrote on Facebook following that incident.

The Sept. 3 incident remains under investigation, according to San Francisco police.

The California Post reached out to Waymo about the incident but they declined to comment.
