An Albany watering hole often frequented by business leaders, lawmakers, and lobbyists from around the state has closed its doors.

The War Room Tavern and its cigar lounge have closed up shop as PR exec Todd Shapiro pivots to his next venture, a private club concept in downtown Albany, dubbed Greenhouse Social Club at La Serre.

“The War Room Tavern brought people together during a time when our country often feels divided,” said Shapiro. “We welcomed four governors, state and federal officials, Republicans and Democrats, along with business leaders and community figures. Important conversations and relationships were built across the tables of the War Room.”

“In many ways, it feels like losing a child, because we built something special here.”

Shapiro, ex-Mayor Eric Adams’ top spokesperson, purchased the new spot on Eagle Street last year with plans to create a members-only social club.

He said he’s already dropped more than $1 million into the space that will feature multiple lounges and dining areas, along with Albany’s only rooftop spots.

The PR guru said the decision wasn’t financial, but running the War Room while trying to get his next space up and running was just too much.

“I simply don’t want to run three places at once. Between my public relations work in New York City, our new Albany office, and the launch of Greenhouse Social Club at La Serre, I want to put all of my energy into building one extraordinary place for Albany.”

He hopes a “political junkie” purchases the War Room to keep its “spirit alive.”

“If someone wants to keep the War Room name, they are welcome to do so. In fact, we’ve already received several offers from people interested in continuing the concept,” he said.
