Back in the day, the Yankees would have had a way to avoid — or at least delay — the tough decisions coming to them by Sunday.
Anybody on their 40-man roster would have been fair game to call up on Sept. 1, and they would have had to figure out from there exactly how to use them.
Instead, teams now essentially get to add one extra position player and one extra pitcher to their 26-man roster.
For the Yankees, the math is not that simple.
