Yankees’ unlikely double-play duo is on a quest to become one up the middle

CLEARWATER, Fla. — They are the Yankees’ version of the Odd Couple.

The shortstop is a buttoned-up, mostly reserved 23-year-old who grew up as a baseball rat in New Jersey and “acts like he’s old as hell,” the second baseman says. The second baseman is a vibrant 27-year-old from the Bahamas who plays and exists with swagger, and can only be described as “one of one — in the best way,” by the shortstop.

Together, Anthony Volpe and Jazz Chisholm Jr. are the Yankees’ new double-play combination, one that has the potential to be a dynamic defensive duo up the middle.

“I think we can be the best shortstop-second baseman in the league defensively,” Chisholm said Thursday. “I think we’re probably going to turn the most double plays in the league, too.”
