One person was killed when a small plane crashed on the highway in the northern suburbs of New York City Thursday night just moments after the pilot reported engine issues, officials said.
The plane came down in the median of Interstate-684 near Exit 2 in Harrison near the Westchester County Airport around 7 p.m., according to New York State Police.
Police said two people were in the plane and one of them died.
No information was provided on the second occupant.
The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed the pilot reported engine issues on the aircraft, a single-engine TECNAM P2008, just before crashing.
The small aircraft left Linden Airport in New Jersey around 6:09 p.m. and was expected to land at Westchester County Airport at 6:45 p.m., according to flightradar24, with the plane reaching a peak altitude of 3,150 feet before appearing to free fall.
The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board will investigate, along with police, an FAA spokesperson said.
The highway was closed in both directions after the crash, causing major traffic delays.
Police are advising motorists to avoid the area.
Exit 2 is the exit for the airport.
