Hemet police say they have cracked a bold toy theft ring, recovering about $10,000 worth of stolen LEGO sets and Hot Wheels in a dramatic Southern California bust.

The operation, led by the Hemet Police Department’s Organized Retail Theft Team with support from the Southwest Cities SWAT, culminated in a search of a residence on the 300 block of South Gilbert Street.

Authorities say the suspect, 37-year-old Hugo Omar Sanchez-Sanchez, was quickly taken into custody and booked on felony charges for possession of stolen property and organized retail theft.

“This operation sends a clear message that organized retail theft will not be tolerated in the City of Hemet,” Hemet Police Chief Michael Arellano said in a statement. “By recovering this stolen merchandise and returning it to our local businesses, we are not only holding offenders accountable but also helping to reduce the financial impact these crimes have on our business partners.”

According to the Hemet Police Department press release, the investigation began after detectives received tips from local retailers about missing high-value merchandise.

They discovered Sanchez-Sanchez had been buying stolen goods from multiple individuals and reselling them at local swap meets, a classic organized retail theft operation.

Police stress this kind of crime hits small businesses especially hard.

Collectibles like LEGO sets and Hot Wheels are high-value and easy to move, making them prime targets for thieves.

The recovered merchandise has been returned to the affected stores.
