4.6 magnitude earthquake rocks Bay Area as terrified residents report sharp jolt

A preliminary 4.6-magnitude earthquake rattled the Bay Area early Thursday, striking just before 1:45 a.m., according to the United States Geological Survey.

The epicenter was located in the Santa Cruz Mountains, with strong shaking reported in Oakland, San Francisco, and as far north as Petaluma.

There were no immediate reports of damage, though earthquake alerts were sent to many mobile phones.

The quake was initially measured at magnitude 5.1, the San Francisco Chronicle reported. The USGS revised it down to 4.6.

Video shared afterward showed items scattered across the floor inside the Boulder Creek Drug Store following the earthquake, The shaking was felt widely across the Bay Area, waking residents, but no damage has been reported in the region.
