Black Lives Matter leaders who previously threatened to burn down the city tried to hijack Mayor Adams’ press conference in the wake of his historic federal charges Thursday.
Hawk Newsome — who once promised “bloodshed” in response to Adams’ push for tougher policing –attempted to drown out the embattled mayor before he even started speaking outside Gracie Mansion, calling his longtime foe “an embarrassment to black people.”
“This is Black Lives Matter Greater New York saying that this is not a black thing. This is not a black thing — this is a YOU thing,” he yelled.
“You put the police on people. You should resign. You’re an embarrassment, you’re an embarrassment to black people.”
“No bail,” Newsome added. “No bail.”
Newsome has stirred up the Big Apple before, and in 2021 threatened “riots, fire” and “bloodshed” if Adams brought down crime — and one year later called the city “a war zone.”
On Thursday, he took credit for leading the verbal assault on the embattled mayor, including one protester who yelled, “You belong in jail with no bail next to Sean ‘P-Diddy’ Combs.”
The rowdy crowd of hecklers shouted down Adams and former NAACP president Hazel Dukes, calling the mayor “nothing.”
“Our voice is louder than yours,” the woman yelled. “You’re gonna pay political people who don’t care about our people.”
The raucous comments came as Adams was hit with a 57-page federal indictment charging him with pocketing $10 million in bribes and perks.
Adams stood shoulder to shoulder with Dukes and other civil rights leaders, including Herbert Daughtry and Chantel Wright.
But a crowd of detractors marred the event, with one heckler calling Dukes “a political pawn.”
“You’re always in favor of the cops until they come after you,” one man yelled.
When Dukes suggested, “We’re not here to criticize,” one protester responded, “Yes we are!”
Adams tried to quiet the crowd, but was shouted down.
