Convicted Sex Offender Anthony Weiner Plans Another Political Comeback, Files to Run For Office in New York

Convicted sex offender Anthony Weiner is planning his own political comeback.

The former Congressman, who was forced to resign his seat over sexting scandals and was later convicted of sexting a minor, has filed to run for a seat on the New York City Council.

Weiner seemingly confirmed his decision to run on the X platform with a post that read: “Mr Moneybags over here.”

His comments appear to be a sarcastic reference to the fact that the campaign has so far received zero dollars in contributions.

In a recent broadcast of his The Middle radio show, Weiner admitted that he still craved a life of public service.

“The things in my past, the things about my addiction, the things about my acting out, the things about my background – it’s a lot, it’s a lot,” he said.

“But we’re at a moment that we Democrats, we seem like we come into knife fights carrying library books all the time.”

Speaking to The New York PostWeiner played down his filing as still being part of an “exploratory committee,” although he has already organized a speaking gig with the Downtown Independent Democrats on Thursday.

“[They] made a precondition of participating in their candidate forum that you had to have an open committee, so here I am,” he said.

It is not the first time that Weiner, now 60, has tried his luck at making a political comeback.

After resigning from Congress, he ran for New York mayor in 2013, although his campaign collapsed after the release of sexual messages he had sent under the cover name Carlos Danger. He ended the primary in a lowly fifth place.

In 2017, Weiner pled guilty to sexual contact with a minor and was sentenced to 21 months in prison and was also required to permanently register as a sex offender.

He served out his sentence in federal prison and was released in 2019.
