This NYC deli’s take on a Big Apple classic is totally (dough)nuts.
Those in the know at Manhattan Best Deli & Grill can order the beloved breakfast staple bacon, egg and cheese with the oddest of twists — on a jelly doughnut.
The Audubon Avenue spot, a favorite among Washington Heights locals, will stuff the confection with the popular protein and cheese combo for $6.50.
The traditional morning sandwich was served up oozing to The Post this week, smothered in extra grape jelly, after a regular’s special order went viral on Instagram, sparking controversy among New Yorkers.
“BEC on a WHAT NOW?!” one shocked commenter said.
“BEC on a jelly donut should be lifetime ban from nyc,” said another.
But not everyone was opposed to the sweet and salty mix, including its creator, customer Anthony Byrdman.
“We have the guy do different types of sandwiches . . . so me and my friend came up with that concoction” late one night, he told The Post.
“It’s not something I would typically order but . . . it’s surprisingly not terrible,” said Jimi Rodriguez, 23, a freelancer from Washington Heights, after he sunk his teeth into the swampy sandwich.
“It reminds me of something you’d see at the Connecticut state fair,” said Rosalie Durso as she eyed the oddity.
Some deli goers order their BEC with a smear of jelly, so the doughnut is just a step up from that, said Manhattan Best owner Jamil Ali.
But health conscious students from the nearby Columbia University School of Nursing balked at the bloated breakfast order.
“My initial thought is diabetes,” said student Katie Mcgeehan.
“I would try it but we’re headed to take a test and I don’t know if my stomach can handle that,” said Mcgeehan’s classmate, Zoe Carty.
Eric, a Manhattan Best regular, contemplated the jelly doughnut BEC before going the safer route and opting for a salad instead.
“I think I might try that next time, though,” he said.
