The United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has ordered that all its federal agents deployed in Minneapolis begin using body-worn cameras with immediate effect.

The decision was announced by the agency’s secretary, Kristi Noem, amid growing political and media pressure following several recent incidents during federal operations in the city.

The measure affects agents from various agencies under the DHS umbrella, including personnel from the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the Customs and Border Protection (CBP).

According to official sources, the goal is to enhance transparency in operations and provide a complete record of interventions carried out in the field.

DHS emphasizes that body cameras will help clarify potential controversies, provide objective evidence in case of complaints, and protect both citizens and agents from unfounded accusations.

Secretary Noem has defended the initiative as an accountability tool and indicated that the program could gradually expand to other cities across the country.

The announcement has not gone unnoticed in Minneapolis, a city marked in recent years by intense protests and recurring accusations against law enforcement.

Activist sectors have expressed skepticism about the measure, while others believe that the use of cameras can shed light on interventions that until now were judged solely through partial accounts or incomplete videos circulated on social media.

SEE:

Experience accumulated in numerous police departments since 2020 has shown that full recordings usually provide context to situations that would otherwise be reduced to viral clips.

In many cases, releasing complete footage has debunked initial claims of systematic abuse that lacked supporting evidence.

With this decision, DHS is betting on a model based on verifiable facts and audiovisual records, at a time when public trust in institutions remains a central topic in political debate.

From now on, every federal intervention in Minneapolis will be documented, leaving less room for speculation and more for evidence.
