Paging Frosty.
The first “measurable” snow of the season is expected to hit the city over the weekend, as bone-chilling pre-Christmas temperatures plunge into the mid-teens, forecasters said Friday.
Flurries are expected to start falling overnight Friday with the downfall peaking early Saturday morning as up to two inches accumulate in some areas, said FOX Weather meteorologist Dylan DeBruyn.
Other parts of the city may be sprinkled with just “a coating,” he said.
“It’s gonna feel like the coldest air we’ve had in a couple years,” said DeBruyn. “In terms of wind chill, if you’re shopping outside, definitely bundle up because it can cause health problems like frost bite.”
The snow will likely wind down by noon Saturday, which is forecast to reach a frigid low of 18 degrees at night.
The brutal cold will only worsen Sunday when the mercury plunges to a chilly-but-sunny low of 15 degrees and a “feels like” temperature of 9 degrees.
By contrast, the coldest Dec. 22 ever recorded in New York City was set in 1872 at just 4 degrees.
The average snowfall for December in Central Park is 5 inches — far more than this year to date — while the highest ever was 30.2 inches 1947.
DeBruyn said the Big Apple had a dusting of snow earlier this month, but not enough to accurately measure.
“Technically we got a trace a couple weeks ago but this would be our first measurable snow in the city,” he said.
