A body was found in a suitcase next to an apartment building on Long Island Tuesday, leaving locals in the leafy community in a state of disbelief.
The grisly discovery was made by officers who responded to a call reporting “suspicious activity” in the wooded area off Nassau Road in Huntington Station around noon, according to Suffolk County police.
Passerbys reportedly complained of a foul odor and noted the suspicious suitcase.
“This is unbelievable,” area resident Flavio Ribadeneyra told News12 Long Island. “You would never think that something like that would happen in your building or around your building!”
The suitcase was found deeper in a wooded area near the apartment complex. It is unclear how long it was there for or how long ago the person inside had died.
Police, including the crime lab and K-9 unit, were swarming the area, blocking off the scene with yellow police tape. The medical examiner didn’t arrive to take away the body until nightfall.
The person’s identity and cause of death will not be determined until the autopsy has been completed by the Suffolk County Medical Examiner’s Office, according to Robert Waring, the acting police commissioner.
