LAPD releases video of horrific hit-and-run as cops hunt heartless driver who killed man in crosswalk

The LAPD released a jarring video Tuesday morning of a hit-and-run in hopes of identifying the callous driver who sped away after fatally mowing down a 50-year-old man in a crosswalk.

“A reward of up to $50,000 is available to community members that provide information leading to the offender’s identification, apprehension, and conviction or resolution through a civil compromise,” the department wrote when it shared the video on YouTube.

In the footage, a man identified as Los Angeles resident Javier Tamayo is seen crossing the street in a marked crosswalk at the intersection of Western Avenue and 82nd Street when he was struck by a speeding vehicle.

The hit-and-run happened on Sunday, Feb. 15 around 9:30 p.m.

The police shared stills of the car, described as a tan GMC SUV with LED lights on the running boards, which failed to stop and drove away.

The vehicle was last seen traveling eastbound on 81st Street from Western Avenue.

“The driver of the vehicle failed to stop, identify themselves, and render aid as required by law,” the department added. “Drivers are reminded that if they become involved in a collision, they should pull over and stop as soon as it is safe to do so, notify emergency services, and remain at the scene to identify themselves.”

Paramedics from the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to the scene, where they pronounced Tamayo dead.

In April 2015, the LA City Council created the Hit-and-Run Reward Program Trust Fund to incentivize reports from community members with a financial reward.

Authorities are urging anyone with information regarding this case or the suspect vehicle to contact investigators immediately.
