Nothing seems to go quite right for San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie these days. Following a violent street scuffle that ended with a homeless man body-slamming one of his own security officers, we’re learning new details about a luxury SUV crash involving Lurie and a cable car.
The transit smash happened back in December, but the video is only now coming to light. The mayor’s $135,000 Rivian SUV, decked out with police-style lights, popped to a sudden stop in the middle of Market Street.
That’s when a historic Muni streetcar plowed into the back of it. The classic cable car, beloved by tourists but notoriously hard to repair, was crippled, with roughly $21,400 in damage.
The Mayor’s Rivian was attempting a U-turn where left turns are not allowed according to The San Francisco Standard.
The F-Market streetcar, traveling behind, couldn’t stop in time and hit the SUV, pushing it slightly.
While no injury claims were filed with the city attorney, the incident is coming to light at an already difficult time for Lurie.
Earlier this month, police and bystanders were stunned as a 44-year old homeless man named Tony Phillips tangled with one of Lurie’s plain-clothes bodyguards in the Tenderloin.
Video of the March 5 confrontation shows Phillips and the guard scuffling near Cedar and Larkin street, the bodyguard shoving the homeless man hard, followed by Phillips tackling him to the pavement in a chaotic clash captured from multiple angles.
Prosecutors originally charged Phillips with assaulting a police officer and other counts, but a judge shocked observers by watching the footage and deciding the bodyguard was the one who violently attacked Phillips, ordering him released and issuing a stay-away order from the scene.
Phillips was booked again into jail just days later for allegedly violating that very stay‑away order.
Officers patrolling homeless encampments spotted him near the same corner and cuffed him without incident.
