The Sandinista dictatorship of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo — a duo that seems straight out of an authoritarian soap opera — approved a constitutional reform on Friday eliminating dual nationality.

Nicaraguans who acquire another citizenship will lose their own, in a new blow meant to suffocate opponents and critics, according to the regime’s puppet National Assembly.

In a “special session” held in Niquinohomo, the Assembly — as independent as a parrot in a cage — unanimously approved the reform of articles 23 and 25 of the Constitution. The initiative, of course, came directly from the offices of Ortega and Murillo, who never miss a chance to tighten the chains around the Nicaraguan people.

Buddha D. on X (formerly Twitter): “🚨 Nicaragua’s National Assembly votes to end dual citizenship-except for Central American nationals-targeting thousands, including exiled critics. Ortega’s move tightens control: one passport, one loyalty. 🛂🇳🇮 #Nicaragua #DualCitizenship #OrtegaRegime #CentralAmerica pic.twitter.com/K5jY5NIy9e / X”

This measure is not an isolated whim. It is the latest chapter in a crusade to strip identity from those who dare to challenge the regime.

In recent years, hundreds of opponents, journalists, and activists have been exiled and denationalized — turned into stateless persons for daring to dream of freedom.

The reform establishes that acquiring another nationality will be enough to lose Nicaraguan citizenship. A punishment that, ironically, does not apply to loyal Sandinistas, who will surely find legal loopholes to evade the rule. That’s how “justice” works in Ortega-Murillo’s Nicaragua.

The motive behind this maneuver is clear. Since the 2018 protests, which left over 300 dead according to the IACHR, the regime has intensified its repression.

Exiling dissidents is no longer enough; now they want to erase their connection to the homeland — a revenge as cruel as it is symbolic.

The National Assembly, reduced to an echo chamber for presidential orders, celebrated the reform on X as if it were a historic achievement. But the world is not fooled: this is one more step toward consolidating a dictatorship that despises freedom and human dignity.

This isn’t the first time Sandinismo has shown its true face. Ortega, once a revolutionary hero, and Murillo, his inseparable co-dictator, have turned Nicaragua into a fiefdom where dissent is a crime and democracy, a distant memory.

The international community has condemned these actions. Organizations like the OAS have pointed out that the regime systematically violates human rights. However, Ortega and Murillo appear immune to criticism, entrenched in their bubble of power.

For Nicaraguans in exile, this reform is yet another blow. Losing their nationality doesn’t just take away a document; it tears away a piece of their identity — a punishment designed to humiliate and silence them.

Meanwhile, the regime continues to peddle its narrative of “sovereignty” and “anti-imperialism.” But behind the leftist rhetoric lies one truth: today’s Sandinismo is a machine of oppression that betrays the very ideals it once claimed to defend.

In times like these, conservative values shine bright. The defense of individual liberty, respect for national identity, and the fight for democracy are non-negotiable principles.

In the face of tyrannies like Ortega and Murillo’s, the right must raise its voice — not only to condemn but to inspire a future where human dignity triumphs over authoritarianism.

Nicaragua deserves more than a regime that punishes its children for dreaming of a free country. Hope lies in those, both inside and outside, who do not give up. Because even if they are stripped of their citizenship, their love for their homeland can never be taken away.
