An off-duty cop was found in a pool of blood after he fatally shot himself inside an upper Manhattan apartment on Tuesday afternoon, The Post has learned.
The NYPD officer — identified by colleagues in social media posts as Gregory J. Purvis of the 30th Precinct in Hamilton Heights — had parked his car near an apartment building on West 186th Street in Fort George before going inside, police sources said.
Later, his partner went to the scene because he hadn’t heard from the officer in some time, sources said.
When he arrived, he looked through a window and saw the officer laying on the floor.
Cops busted in and found the officer bleeding from a gunshot wound to the head, sources said.
They also recovered a gun at the scene.
Heartbroken cops offered their condolences after his death.
In a Facebook post, the Bronx chapter of the National Latino Peace Officers Association said they extended their “deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of PO Gregory J. Purvis from the 30th Precinct, who tragically took his own life on 08/20/2024.”
“Mental health struggles are real, and it’s important that we support one another during these difficult times,” the post said. “If you or someone you know is struggling, please reach out—there is always help available.”
“Rest in peace, Officer Purvis,” it continued. “Your service and dedication will never be forgotten.”
Michael A. Montes, emergency management director from Mount Vernon, New York, wrote on LinkedIn that he was mourning Purvis’s death.
“In this moment of grief, let us remember the importance of reaching out and supporting one another,” he continued. “If you or someone you know is struggling, please seek help.”
