Off-duty NYPD cop shoots man in the head after tracking his wife’s stolen car: sources

An off-duty NYPD cop shot and gravely wounded a man suspected of stealing his wife’s car in the Bronx late Monday, law enforcement sources said.

The cop — who is assigned to the Public Security Section under the department’s Intelligence Bureau and is often stationed at Gracie Mansion — opened fire around 9:10 p.m. on West 231st Street near Albany Crescent in Kingsbridge, hitting the 30-year-old victim in the head, the sources said.

The ailing man went by private means to NewYork-Presbyterian Allen Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition, according to police.

The violence erupted when the cop tracked the previously stolen vehicle and found the 30-year-old man and another person believed to be involved in the heist, sources said.

The officer had not been arrested by Tuesday afternoon, and it remained unclear what – if any – charges he would face.

He was placed on modified duty, sources said. The investigation is ongoing by the department’s Force Investigation Division, according to police.

The violence happened in the confines of the NYPD’s 50th Precinct, where three shootings with seven victims had been reported in 2026 through Sunday, according to department data.

At that time in 2025, no shootings had been reported within the precinct’s boundaries.
