A pit bull viciously mauled a two-year-old boy and his mother in a random Texas attack that left the tot fighting for his life.
“He was just covered in blood,” the boy’s mother, Kelsey Marie Welch told WFAA.
Welch, 30, who lives in Pecan Acres Mobile Park in Midlothian, said that she let the pit bull mix out of his cage for a walk when it went berserk and burst into her son Julius’ room, proceeding to bite the toddler’s head on March 27 at approximately 9:30 pm.
“[The dog] pounced on the bed and started attacking my son… I was trying to open the dog’s mouth because he immediately went for the back of his head,” she said.
The mother sprang into action and got in between her beloved pooch and her son, and the pit bull began gnawing on her leg.
Welch said she was able to escape with her boy and lock the dog in the room until police arrived. The pit bull was later euthanized by animal control.
“I thought my child was honestly dying,” the horrified mother shared.
Julius had to be airlifted to Cook Children’s Medical Center, where he underwent a 9-hour life-saving surgery and blood transfusion. Doctors were forced to put the toddler on a ventilator after the horrific attack, according to a GofundMe started by a family friend.
“I still close my eyes and I see that image of my son — I can’t even see his head — and a dog shaking [him],” the mother said.
Welch originally told police that the pit bull was an unknown dog that entered her home, but officials later learned the dog belonged to her boyfriend, CBS Texas reported.

Family members told CBS Texas the sweet and gentle boy will require multiple surgeries and extensive medical care as part of his long road to recovery.
Welch said she got the pit bull mix when it was six weeks old and the dog grew up around children and had no history of violence.
Julius was able to leave the hospital’s intensive care unit earlier this week, and Welch said doctors had removed his breathing tube.
Neither the mother nor the boyfriend has been charged at this time.
