Separate Shootings at Mississippi Homecoming Celebrations Leave At Least 6 Dead, 13 Injured – Suspects at Large

Two different shooting incidents at Mississippi high school homecoming celebrations occurred on Friday night, killing a combined six people.

This comes after President Trump deployed federal authorities and National Guard troops to stop crime in Memphis, Tennessee, which borders northern Mississippi.

One shooting at a Leland, Mississippi, high school homecoming celebration left four dead and 12 injured last night.

Another at Heidelberg, Mississippi’s Heidelberg High School, just hours away, left two dead and at least one injured.

The suspects reportedly remain at large.

Per Daily Mail:

The violence erupted at around midnight on the city of Leland’s main street, Mayor John Lee told CBS.

Crowds had flocked to the city to watch Leland High School take on Charleston High School in a homecoming football game.

Bystanders caught up in the chaos described how they cowered inside the trunk of their cars to escape the gunfire.

No suspects are currently in custody. Daily Mail contacted Leland Police Department for more details, but a spokesman said there is no further information available at this time.

Leland Mayor John Lee wrote on Facebook hours after the shooting, “I’m deeply saddened about the tragedy” and announced that a scheduled block party would be canceled.

In Heidelberg, two were shot and killed on campus.

Per WDAM:

A celebration of high school football ended in gunfire and tragedy Friday night at the Heidelberg High School football field.

Heidelberg Police Chief Cornell White said two people were shot and killed on the high school’s grounds, and at least one more was wounded.

One victim was discovered on the school’s baseball field, while another died in a tailgating area near the bleachers.

White said the shooter or shooters remained at large

This is a developing story.
