Shocking video shows the moment a 64-year-old driver lost control of her SUV and smashed it into a New Jersey UPS store — just feet from where the manager was standing.
Cameras inside the Paramus store showed a Mercedes seemingly turning slowly into a parking spot around 1 p.m. Monday — just to unexpectedly accelerate into the front window, also damaging the neighboring F45 Fitness.
The family-run store’s manager, Zach Tammous, was working right near where it hit, with the footage showing him racing away in a shower of glass.
“I was actually working on the printer right out front and then I saw the car come speeding ahead and I just ran,” Tammous told ABC7.
“I was scared. Adrenaline shock. First instinct is to run.”
Tammous was left covered in broken glass but he and his coworker were otherwise unhurt, he told ABC7.
The driver, only identified as a 64-year-old woman from Ho-Ho-Kus, accidentally stepped on the accelerator instead of the break as she was parking, causing her to crash through the front windows of the UPS store and damaging a neighboring gym, authorities said.
“The lady wasn’t really talking,” recalled Tammous, who rushed out to check on her and call 911.
“She felt a little dizzy, I think she was saying,” he told ABC7, with ambulance crews arriving quickly and helping her get out of the SUV “pretty fast.”
Both the UPS store and F45 Fitness on Route 17 North are temporarily closed due to the accident, with the Paramus Building Department coming to assess any structural damage to the building.
No serious injuries to the driver or anyone else were reported.
The crash is under further investigation, according to officials.
