Two inches of snowfall in New York could top off piles leftover from the weekend’s wintry weather, as three separate storms are set to blanket much of the US in white this week.
Millions of Americans are under winter weather alerts for the first squall, which could drop at most about 2 inches of snow over the five boroughs.
The upcoming trio of storms comes after New Yorkers saw upwards of four inches of snow late Saturday night into Sunday morning.
“Round one of the winter weather is going to track to our south, with heavy snow likely in Virginia through Washington, DC,” Fox Forecast Center Meteorologist Stephanie van Oppen said.
The second storm, set to start late Wednesday and last into Thursday morning, will likely bring warmer temperatures, causing snow to melt into rain before it can even coat the ground.
“Wednesday night, we might see up to an inch of snow and sleet but it will likely change over to rain on Thursday, so it should melt pretty quickly,” van Oppen said.
The third storm of the week is set to roll in on Saturday, though its too soon to tell whether New York City will see more flurries or just rain, van Oppen said.
“It’s definitely going to be an active week in terms of snow switching over to rain, but we’re not forecasting any blockbuster snow event. Tuesday through Saturday we may see two inches of snow total from the first two storms, and the last storm will likely transition into sleet,” van Oppen said.
Meanwhile, over 80 million people across the US are currently under winter weather alerts as the first storm is already underway in the Ohio Valley.
Parts of Ohio and Kentucky can expect several inches of snow, while areas farther south will see heavy rain start to develop, according to the Fox Forecast Center.
Meanwhile, parts of West Virginia, Virginia and some of southern New Jersey, may see anywhere from 3 to 5 inches of snow, with localized areas seeing 5 to 8 inches, according to the forecast center.
Philadelphia may also see up to 3 inches.
If the city sees more than 2 inches of snowfall, it would mark the city’s snowiest storm of the season.
Meanwhile, an ice storm warning has been issued for parts of western North Carolina, as forecasters predict about a quarter of an inch of ice to form in affected areas.
