Mayor Zohran Mamdani helped Brooklynites dig their cars out of snow dumped by Winter Storm Fern in a photo op on Sunday — but he appeared to be no pro with a shovel.
Video shared by ABC7 shows a hatless Mamdani repeatedly pretzel his back as he lifts heavy shovelfuls of snow during his good Samaritan turn in Clinton Hill, eschewing ally Gov. Kathy Hochul’s safety tips on shoveling in the process.
The poor form ran afoul of how Hochul, a Buffalo native who is used to unreasonable amounts of snow, advised New Yorkers to shovel — namely, with their legs instead of their back.
“Do not bend over to shovel,” she said during a briefing to New Yorkers on Sunday. “You bend down your knees. You want to bend down so you can protect your back.
“Also, you do not need to have a high amount of snow on the shovel,” she said, recounting how her neighbors had heart attacks wielding too-large shovelfuls.
“It’s better to take multiple smaller bites at it, lift smaller amounts of snow, toss it aside. But do not try to go for the big, massive shoveful of snow because regardless of your health, this could cause a heart attack.”
As video of Mamdani’s further snow-shoveling adventures in Williamsburg spread online, Hochul directly offered the well-coiffed mayor advice.
“Thanks for helping out our neighbors, but put on a hat!” she posted on X.
Mamdani, a Democratic socialist, promised in his inaugural speech to “replace the frigidity of individualism with the warmth of collectivism.”
But when Hizzoner had a chance to share the collective warmth Sunday, he arguably acted frigidly.

At one point, Mamdani stopped with his team to help a security guard who was pulled over on the Triborough Bridge.
He called the guard’s boss to help keep the guard out of trouble for being late, the mayor recounted Monday during a weather briefing.
“I looked over at him at that moment, and he was wearing a jacket, and I asked him, ‘You should zip up your jacket. It’s very cold,’” Mamdani said. “And he said, ‘My zipper broke.’”
Mamdani then launched into a man-of-the-people spiel about New Yorkers not having everything they need, arguing the city government can help.
But then a reporter burst Mamdani’s bubble by asking, “So did you give the guy your jacket?”
“No, I actually put him in his car and gave him hand warmers — got the heat back up,” the mayor said.
