ALLENTOWN, Pa. — Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) made a bold prediction stumping for Donald Trump in Pennsylvania, telling Allentown attendees that if the ex-prez returns to the White House, Democrats are sure to impeach him for the third time — and fast.
“I predict that if they have the votes in the House, they’re gonna start impeachment proceedings the day after he walks into the White House,” Rubio said Monday. “That’s how deranged they’ve become about it.”
The Democratic-led House impeached Trump twice during his first term — in 2019 on charges he pressured Ukraine to interfere in the 2020 presidential election and in 2021 following the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.
The Senate acquitted Trump in both impeachments, though more GOP senators — including Pennsylvania’s own Pat Toomey — voted to convict Trump in his second impeachment trial than his first.
Rubio made the comments campaigning for Dave McCormick, the Republican Army veteran and former hedge-fund executive running to unseat longtime Democratic Sen. Bob Casey.
Rubio described Pennsylvania as “what Florida used to be,” now that the senator’s home state has moved more firmly into GOP territory in the last 10 years.
The Keystone State is still swinging, with its 19 electoral votes up for grabs this November.
Rubio also emphasized how important a McCormick victory is for Trump’s White House bid since flipping Casey’s seat red would be sure to shore up his support in the upper chamber.
“Donald Trump becoming president without a Republican Senate is self-defeating,” Rubio said. “He won’t get a single person in his cabinet confirmed by those guys, not one.”
After Rubio’s introduction, McCormick took the stage and painted Casey as a career politician, underscoring the length of his opponent’s service by noting that when he was first elected to hold public office in 1996, Los Del Río’s “Macarena” topped the Billboard Hot 100.
Polls have shown Casey with a slight lead, though McCormick is closing the gap and told the crowd he’s confident he can win.
“I always knew the following: If I could get into the third period within a point or two, I’d win,” the former West Point wrestler said.
“The reason is because the third period doesn’t have anything to do with wrestling,” McCormick added. “It’s about a desire to win that is consuming.”
