Aaron Judge’s clutch narrative has hit a sad low point after WBC flop

SAN DIEGO — As you may have seen elsewhere in this newspaper (and also if you haven’t deleted me yet from your social media), I have a book coming out Tuesday called “The Bosses of The Bronx.” Much of it details the 37 years’ worth of antics, winning, losing, winning again and overall mania of George Steinbrenner’s time with the Yankees.

Steinbrenner, as you may recall, once employed Reggie Jackson, who earned the title of Mr. October thanks in large part to the three home runs he hit in Game 6 of the 1977 World Series.

Inspired by that, when Derek Jeter hit a walk-off homer to win Game 4 of the 2001 World Series a few ticks past midnight as Oct. 31 bled into Nov. 1, Michael Kay immediately dubbed Jeter “Mr. November” on the radio. Many others followed suit as it occurred to them a few minutes later. Although that was supposed to be more homage than reality, Jeter’s baseball-reference.com page lists it as one of his nicknames, along with “The Captain,” “Captain Clutch” and “DJ.”

(Apparently b-r.com respects that only close friends — and overfamiliar reporters seeking ingratiation during news conferences — called him “Jeets.”)
