Breaking down the Jets’ top defensive coordinator candidates — and the unique challenges of the job

The NFL coaching carousel is spinning at a rapid pace this January.

There are going to be 10 new head coaches hired this offseason after the Bills created the latest opening by firing Sean McDermott on Monday. Four jobs — the Giants, Falcons, Dolphins and Titans — have already been filled — with John Harbaugh, Kevin Stefanski, Jeff Hafley and Robert Saleh, respectively.

The Jets are not changing head coaches but they are looking for a defensive coordinator, and they may need for some of the head coaching dominos to fall before they can find their guy. Some candidates are surely waiting to see if they are going to join a new head coach or if they will replace a coordinator leaving to be a head coach. I would think the Jets will have someone hired in the next two weeks.

The team announced its initial round of interviews on Friday. It was not the most inspiring list, which you would expect. This job is going to be a tough sell and it’s hard to see any coach with options choosing the Jets. The team went 3-14 last year and Aaron Glenn is entering 2026 with a tremendous amount of pressure on him to win or he could be fired. The Jets have resources to improve the roster, but the defense needs a near complete overhaul after trading its two best players at the deadline.
