The Virginia Tech Hokies are going to write off the 2025 season. Not only are they 2-5 with a tough schedule to close out the season, but they’ve already fired their coach, and their main rival, Virginia, is one of the biggest surprises in college football.

Friday night’s clash with Cal could be one of the last opportunities that Virginia Tech has to soften the blow of a dismal campaign.

The Hokies are 4.5-point favorites over the Golden Bears on Friday night.

Cal vs. Virginia Tech odds, prediction

While Virginia Tech seems destined for a rebuild, things look pretty rosy for the California Golden Bears. Not much was expected out of Cal in 2025, but this young roster has galvanized quickly, led by the emergence of freshman sensation Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele at quarterback.

Although he still has mistakes in his game, Sagapolutele’s flash and dash have raised Cal’s ceiling significantly, turning the Golden Bears into the type of squad that should be able to hang with any team when they’re an underdog and blow out any team when they’re a favorite.

That’s the plan, anyways.

Betting on College Football?

On the field, things have looked different lately. The offense has stalled, and Sagapolutele has had a couple of duds in recent weeks. That’s why we’re seeing the market backing the Hokies.

That said, the freshman quarterback should be set up for success against a Virginia Tech defense that has leaked points all season.

The Hokies rank 120th in yards per play allowed, 110th in points allowed per game, 131st in completion percentage, and 128th in yards per pass.

This looks like a terrific get-right spot for Sagapolutele and the Cal offense, so don’t be afraid to back the Golden Bears to not only win this one, but have a look at some alternate spreads, too, because if this goes Cal’s way, it could get ugly in Blacksburg.
