Three takeaways from the Giants’ preseason-opening 14-3 win over the Lions:
1. Eric Gray needed a splash play.
The second-year running back had a rough rookie season, and the Giants selected Tyrone Tracy in the fifth round of the 2024 NFL Draft.
Gray came up with two big moments: He made an over-the-shoulder grab for a 24-yard gain, then used a nifty juke to leave cornerback Morice Norris grabbing at air on a 48-yard touchdown run, the first of two scoring runs.
2. QB Tommy DeVito looks so much more in command of the offense than he did at this time a year ago.
That makes sense, right? DeVito was rushed onto the field after Drew Lock got hurt and showed he knows what he is doing running Brian Daboll’s system.
3. Linebacker Dyontae Johnson is turning heads in training camp and the first-year player from Toledo had a sack of Nate Sudfeld on the first defensive series, showing good quickness in the open field.
Later in the first quarter, he combined with Jordon Riley to stuff Craig Reynolds for no gain on third-and-2.
