It was the kind of harmless Q&A that follows all these college football playoff games now, and usually speeds in one ear and zooms out the other without much notice.
Rece Davis, armed with a microphone, stood on the makeshift stage that had taken over the Rose Bowl playing surface minutes after Indiana put the finishing touches on a 38-3 stomping of Alabama on New Year’s Day. To his left stood IU coach Curt Cignetti, who is generally so stoic and expressionless he’d make Tom Landry look like Jim Carrey.
“How would you describe the turnaround and what you’ve been able to build in a short period of time?” Davis asked, referring to the fact that until November, Indiana football had lost more games than any other team in the 156-year history of college football.
Cignetti’s signature smirk curved ever so slightly into a smile.
