How a fresh Yankees start could help former mega-prospect save his career

Wednesday was another positive day at Yankees camp. For the first time since March 6, 2025 — an outing in which he knew “something wasn’t right,” which began a weeks-long saga that ended on the operating table for Tommy John surgery — Gerrit Cole was back on a mound and facing hitters in game action.

On the other side of surgery, Gerrit Cole looked like Gerrit Cole. He threw 10 pitches in one scoreless inning, buzzing in four-seamers at an encouraging average of 97.1 mph while sprinkling in a couple knuckle-curveballs and sliders. The start was over within minutes, but consider those minutes among the most uplifting of Yankees spring training.

Cole is doing well. So is the similarly rehabbing Carlos Rodón. Giancarlo Stanton — remember the mystery surrounding his elbows at this time last year? — is having a nice camp. As is virtually everyone significant around the Yankees. The big stories are developing well in a camp light on drama.

In today’s newsletter, we’ll dive into a smaller story.
