Jets officially eliminated from playoff contention with crushing overtime loss to Dolphins

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — Another miserable loss in another miserable Jets season.

This week, the Jets blew an eight-point, fourth-quarter lead and lost 32-26 in overtime to the Dolphins.

There was not much suspense left but this loss officially eliminates the Jets from playoff contention and drops them to 3-10 this year.

While fans may rejoice about draft pick positioning, this one will sting the Jets players and coaches. They played their best game of the year for three quarters and then saw the game slip away in the fourth quarter, only to regain the lead, only to see the Dolphins tie the game in the final minute and win it in overtime.

The Jets took a 26-23 lead with 52 seconds left in the game on a 42-yard field goal from Anders Carlson. But Malik Washington then returned Carlson’s kickoff 45 yards to the Miami 46-yard line. The Dolphins gained 20 yards on six plays and Jason Sanders kicked a 52-yard field goal to tie the game at 26-26 with seven seconds left in regulation.

The Dolphins won the coin toss to start overtime and went 70 yards on eight plays. Tua Tagovailoa hit tight end Jonnu Smith for a 10-yard touchdown to end the game.

This was the Jets’ fourth loss in a row and ninth in 10 games. This is their ninth straight loss in Miami.

For much of the day, it felt like the Jets would pull off the game. Rodgers had 339 yards passing, the first time he has thrown for 300 yards since 2021. Garrett Wilson (114 yards) and Davante Adams (109) both had big games. The Jets scored on their first five possessions of the game (not counting a kickoff return that ended the first half).

The Jets trailed 15-13 at halftime after giving up a 57-yard field goal by Sanders at the end of the half. But Rodgers and the Jets came out firing to start the second half and he led them on a seven-play, 70-yard touchdown drive to move ahead 20-15. Carlson booted his third field goal of the day later in the third quarter to push the lead to 23-15.

The Jets defense gave up four scores in the first half but tightened things up in the third quarter, forcing the Dolphins’ first two punts of the game.

Miami broke through in the fourth quarter with a nine-play, 60-yard drive to tie the game. Jets cornerback D.J. Reed was called for a pass interference penalty that moved the ball 23 yards to the Jets’ 8-yard line. The Jets stuffed the Dolphins from the 1 on third down but Tagovailoa hit Tyreek Hill on fourth-and-4 for a touchdown with 9:04 to play in the game. Hill was matched up with Jets safety Chuck Clark on the play and shook him to get open. The Dolphins tied the game at 23-23 on a two-point conversion pass from Tagovailoa to Jaylen Waddle.

The Jets went three-and-out on their next possession, their second in the fourth quarter after not having to punt in the first three quarters.

The Dolphins failed to move the ball on their next possession, which was hurt by a holding penalty that eventually led to a punt.

Miami opened the game with an eight-play, 70-yard drive that made it look like they would have an easy day against the Jets defense. De’Von Achane scored a two-yard touchdown to give the Dolphins a 6-0 lead. The Jets answered with an 11-play drive of their own that ended with a Carlson field goal to cut the lead in half.

Sanders made it a 9-3 Miami lead with a 39-yard field goal in the second quarter.

The Jets reached the end zone with Isaiah Davis scoring his second touchdown in as many weeks, this one a 17-yard run by the rookie. Davis and Braelon Allen both had an impact in the passing game with Breece Hall sidelined by a knee injury.

The Davis touchdown was the first Jets touchdown in Hard Rock Stadium since 2021. They were shut out last year and had only two field goals in the 2022 game. The score gave the Jets a 10-9 lead. Two more Sanders field goals and a Carlson field goal made 15-13 at halftime.
