Jets will be without Haason Reddick for opener as contract holdout continues

It looks like Haason Reddick’s holdout will continue into the regular season.

Despite a report from former Browns general manager Mike Lombardi on Friday night that Reddick was planning to report on Saturday, that was not the case, according to coach Robert Saleh.

“I’ll stand firm that when he gets here, we’re going to welcome him with open arms,” Saleh said before the Jets’ final practice ahead of their Monday night showdown against the 49ers. “We’re going to love him up and he’s going to be a part of this football team and he’s going to help us win a lot of football games. He’s gotta sort through the financial stuff, which is none of my business.”

Acquired from the Eagles in late March, Reddick didn’t take part in spring workouts and didn’t show up for training camp, piling up fines of $50,000 per day and more for the three preseason games he missed.

For every game Reddick misses, he would cost himself roughly $800,000.

Reddick is unhappy with his contract, which pays him a $14.25 million base salary, but the Jets have refused to discuss any adjustments to his new deal until he shows up at their practice facility.

A two-time Pro Bowler, Reddick declined a contract extension offer by the Jets before the trade was complete, but they still expected him to honor his existing contract.

General manager Joe Douglas recently said he has not spoken directly to Reddick since he was in the Jets’ building on April 1 and has not had any conversations with his agent, Tony Dandy, of late either.

Reddick, who averaged a shade over 12.6 sacks over the last four years, requested a trade in early August, but Douglas has said the Jets do not plan on moving him.

Offensive lineman Wes Schweitzer (hand) and linebacker Zaire Barnes (ankle) will both miss the game on Monday night.

Schweitzer, the team’s backup interior offensive lineman, is going on Injured Reserve, Saleh said.

He will miss at least the next four games. Saleh declined to say which offensive lineman would be the lead backup in place of Schweitzer, saying the Jets have options.
