The extra-point attempt, by some accounts, has been around since the 19th century. So for ESPN to suggest your kick is on the wrong side of history — that’s pretty special.
During the Bills’ 23-20 win over the Jets on “Monday Night Football,” Joe Buck shredded Buffalo kicker Tyler Bass’ missed attempt in the first half after the ball sailed wide left of the uprights at MetLife Stadium.
“No chance. That was just weird,” Buck said.
When on-air partner Troy Aikman responded, “I don’t think the wind had anything to do with that one,” Buck replied, “I’ve seen better kicks than that on ‘College GameDay.’ What the heck was that?”
Buck appeared to reference the student-kicking event on the ESPN program.
Bass, in his fifth season in Buffalo, has made 18-of-20 extra-point attempts this season. He’s also gone 9-of-12 in field-goal attempts.
The Georgia Southern product missed the extra-point attempt following an eight-yard touchdown pass thrown by quarterback Josh Allen to wide receiver Mack Hollins to put Buffalo ahead, 13-10.
Buck and Aikman weren’t the only ones on ESPN who mocked Bass’ miss Monday.
Former Patriots coach and regular “ManningCast” guest Bill Belichick also dropped a zinger on the network’s alternate “Monday Night Football” broadcast.
“That looks like my 4-Iron,” Belichick chimed in.
The Jets weren’t without their own kicking problems during a blustery night at MetLife.
Greg Zuerlein missed two field goal attempts, one from 32 yards out and the other from the 43-yard line.
Both attempts came in the second half and could have given the Jets a lead.
“I’m just not kicking the ball,” Zuerlein said postgame. “I wouldn’t say the [windy] conditions played into it. It’s just me not kicking the ball the proper way, and results showed for themselves. Not just this game, but previous games [Denver] as well. These guys [teammates] deserve better, and I can do better. I just need to do it.’’
The Jets will have an opportunity to bounce back in prime time this week when they visit the Steelers on “Sunday Night Football.”
