Mets activate Starling Marte for injury return in lineup boost

For the first time since June 22, the Mets had Starling Marte in their lineup.

They officially activated their outfielder off the injured list ahead of Sunday’s 3-2 loss to the Marlins and started him in right field — hitting fifth — before completing a three-game set against their National League East opponent.

In a corresponding move, the Mets designated outfielder Ben Gamel for assignment.

Marte, who had been on the injured list with a right knee bone bruise, went 1-for-3 with a single as the starter in right field on Sunday.

Through 66 games this season entering Sunday, Marte hit .278 with seven homers and 30 RBIs, and now, he’ll join a collection of outfielders that also includes Brandon Nimmo, Harrison Bader, Jesse Winker and Tyrone Taylor.

J.D. Martinez has also been their regular designated hitter, so it’s unclear what Marte’s role, and the roles of those around him in the outfield besides Nimmo, will resemble during the final stretch of the season.

“He’s a big part of this team. His bat, his speed, there’s a lot. His presence on the lineup, the experience obviously,” Mendoza told reporters Saturday before the Mets’ victory against the Marlins. “He’s been in this league for a long time and had a pretty good career and we missed him. The fact that we’re getting a healthy Marte here, especially where we are in the schedule, is going to be huge for our team.”
