Patriots receiver Stefon Diggs has been charged with felony strangulation or suffocation and misdemeanor assault and battery charges from an alleged Dec. 2 incident, according to Boston 25.
The Patriots beat the Giants on “Monday Night Football” the day before.
Diggs, 32, has denied the allegations, according to the Patriots.
“The New England Patriots are aware of the accusations that have been made regarding Stefon Diggs. Stefon has informed the organization that he categorically denies the allegations,” the organization stated in a release, per ESPN. “We support Stefon. We will continue to gather information and will cooperate fully with the appropriate authorities and the NFL as necessary. Out of respect for all parties involved, and given that this is an ongoing legal matter, we will have no further comment at this time.”
Diggs’ attorney, Michael DiStefano, argued in court Tuesday that the police report should be impounded, and said his client made a financial offer to the alleged victim to end the issue, per the outlet.
The Judge said she would issue a ruling “shortly,” according to Boston 25, but had not done so as of late Tuesday morning.
“As we speak, they’re working to come to an agreement on that,” DiStefano said, according to Boston 25.
Diggs, an 11-year pro, is dating rapper Cardi B and the two recently had a child together.
The 32-year-old reportedly is set to be arraigned on Jan. 23, which would be two days before the AFC Championship game.
The Patriots are the AFC East champion and enter Week 18 as the AFC’s No. 2 seed with a chance to claim home-field advantage and the top overall seed.
Should the Patriots not claim the top seed, their first game would come next weekend or the following Monday (Jan. 12)
The Judge agreed to consider a request to delay Diggs’ arraignment until March.
Diggs has 82 catches for 970 yards and four touchdowns this season, and is coming off back-to-back 100-plus-yard efforts in winning efforts against the Ravens (10 catches, 138 yards) and Jets (six catches, 101 yards and one touchdown) to help the Patriots win their first division title since 2019.
The Patriots signed Diggs to a three-year, $69 million deal last offseason after he missed most of the 2024 campaign due to an ACL tear suffered with the Texans.
His career began with five seasons with the Vikings before being traded to the Bills, and spent four years with Buffalo before being traded to the Texans before the 2024 campaign.
Diggs’ Patriots tenure has included some controversy, having been captured on a boat passing around a mysterious pink substance to bikini-clad women.
“I want to be as candid with you as possible but I kind of have a thing where I don’t talk about my personal life with people I don’t know personally,” Diggs said of the incident in June, per ESPN.
“I had a conversation with (Patriots coach Mike) Vrabel obviously and I’ll echo everything he said, hoping everybody is making good decisions. And I had a conversation with people in the building as well. So everything else is everything else. The particulars are all internal.”
