‘Potvin sucks’ isn’t just a chant — it’s central to the fabric of the Islanders-Rangers rivalry

The years fly by. Old resentments lessen, then fade away. Older generations, sadly, move on, then pass away. Even the fiercest feuds have a way of becoming less visceral. Time was if you wore a Yankees cap to Fenway Park, or a Red Sox jersey to Yankee Stadium, you risked your physical well-being.

Now, the worst you’ll probably get is some good-natured ribbing, maybe some genuine trash talk if things go well for the home team.

And you know: that’s probably not such a terrible thing. I’m half-Irish, half-Italian, and I know both like to claim the joke about “Irish/Italian Alzheimer’s” — you forget everything but the grudge.

So it happens everywhere.
