One bat, everybody knows the rules.
Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy fumed over the Yankees’ new Torpedo bats in a more than two-minute rant posted on X on Sunday night.
The new bats have caused quite a stir around Major League Baseball, especially after the Yankees clobbered a franchise-record nine home runs in a thumping of the Brewers on Saturday, and Portnoy couldn’t help but offer his two cents on Sunday after the Bronx Bombers hit four more to help sweep the series.
“The Yankees hired an MIT physicist to basically take wood from the other part of the bat – near the handle and label and put it in the sweet spot – making the sweet spot bigger. They did this because Anthony Volpe sucks and he kept getting jammed and sawed off,” Portnoy said. “And they’re like, ‘how do we make him not suck. Let’s just make this bat called the torpedo bat, where basically if you swing and you make contact on the handle, get sawed off, it’s a home run.”
Portnoy mentioned Jazz Chisholm Jr. as another player who has been hitting homers thanks to the torpedo bat – Chisholm hit two on Sunday against the Brewers – and claimed that Aaron Judge was using the Torpedo Bat, despite the superstar saying he wasn’t.
The Barstool founder said that it was cheating and that it should not be allowed by MLB.
Major League Baseball has said that the bats did not violate league rules or the Bat Supplier Regulations.
Portnoy continued to suggest that the new bats were tantamount to a corked bat and “that’s just making somebody who stinks better.”
“If you get jammed and it’s a home run, that doesn’t mean you suddenly got better, that’s just some geek from MIT, some physicists ruining 100 years of baseball, or 200 years of baseball,” Portnoy said. “Listen, if MLB wants to sit on their ass and not outlaw this torpedo bat then all the teams are gonna do it. And every game is gonna be 100-98 and there’s gonna be 3,000 home runs.”
A noted Boston sports fan, recorded the video while wearing a Red Sox cap and claiming it was an “unbiased rant” at the end of the video.
He also said that the Bronx Bombers have a “long history of cheating and being scumbags, and this is just the latest.”
Portnoy isn’t alone in his displeasure surrounding the new wood.
Brewers closer Trevor Megill told The Post’s Dan Martin that “it’s terrible” when discussing the bats.
