Bryce Young was benched this week by the Panthers, but several teams already have expressed interest in trading for the No.1 overall pick in the 2023 draft, according to ESPN.
Panthers coach Dave Canales has said that the team does not intend to trade the 23-year-old Young, who will be replaced by veteran quarterback Andy Dalton in Sunday’s game against the Raiders.
But the Panthers “have been contacted by certain teams,” while others “have mulled a Young trade within their own organizations,” ESPN insider Adam Schefter reported.
He added that league sources believe “it is only a matter of time” before Carolina “completes a deal involving the second-year quarterback,” albeit most likely “at some point in the offseason.”
Young has posted a 2-16 record as a starter since the Panthers traded up with the Bears to select him first overall out of Alabama last year.
One pick later, the Texans grabbed quarterback C.J. Stroud, who won NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year honors in 2023.
Young has thrown more interceptions (13) than touchdowns (11) in his pro career, while completing just 59 percent of his passes.
In two games this season, the Panthers have totaled a league-worst 245 passing yards.
Several highly drafted quarterbacks have been traded away in recent seasons for marginal returns, including Baker Mayfield, Sam Darnold, Trey Lance and Zach Wilson.
