Browns rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders injured his oblique while throwing early in Day 1 of joint practices with the Eagles on Wednesday, according to ESPN.
Sanders, who’s having himself an impressive training camp, was held out for the remainder of practice. He was in uniform.
At one point during practice, Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts was seen giving Sanders a ride on a golf cart to the locker room area.
The injury news comes two days after Sanders — Cleveland’s 144th overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft — received the most reps in practice.
The former Colorado star dazzled in his preseason debut, a 30-10 win over the Carolina Panthers on Friday.
Sanders completed 14 of 23 passes for 138 yards and two touchdowns in the first half to wide receiver Kaden Davis.
Cleveland head coach Kevin Stefanski said Wednesday that Sanders is in line to start his second preseason game.
If fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel and veteran Kenny Pickett aren’t available due to hamstring injuries, Sanders is next on the depth chart.
Gabriel will get 11-on-11 work in Wednesday’s joint practice in Philadelphia, according to Pro Football Talk.
“The plan was always to give both of those guys start in the preseason, so we’ll see how it shakes out,” Stefanski said.
Veteran Joe Flacco, 40, is the No. 1 quarterback on the Browns’ roster.
Last week, Cleveland added Pro Bowl quarterback Tyler Huntley, who spent four seasons with the Browns from 2020 through 2023.
The Browns play the Eagles on Saturday before closing out the preseason Aug. 23 against the Rams.
Cleveland opens the 2025 campaign at home against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sept. 7.
